‘Hi, I’m Daryl – a textile artist, community arts facilitator, visible mender, and founder of Thrawan.
My love of making began at eight years old, sitting with my Gran Susie as she taught me how to darn socks, knit, sew and cross stitch. Those quiet, shared moments ignited something deep in me — a love of craft, care, and connection that’s shaped everything I do ever since.
At the heart of my work is community. I believe creativity is a powerful tool for connection, joy, and collective care. Whether through sewing, visible mending, quilting, or collaborative making, I’m passionate about creating welcoming spaces where people feel encouraged, curious, and confident in their own creative abilities.
Craft shouldn't feel exclusive — it should feel like home. I love bringing people together to share skills, stories, and time, and I’m constantly inspired by what happens when we slow down and make things with one another.
That’s the spirit of Thrawan or þrawan- an old English word that means to twist or turn. It captures the idea of the cyclical ways of life and making - it’s not always straight forward. It also captures the actual structure of most of the materials I use - all have been spun, twisted, formed into threads and cloth. Thrawan is all about repairing, reconnecting, and remembering that we can all be makers — together with all the twists and turns that come with it.'
